The Twelve Days of Christmas

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved the song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas".

When I became a believer, I found out one of my favorite songs is an English Christmas carol written in 1558. For hundreds of years, Christians were not permitted to practice their faith openly. A song emerged for young children with a hidden meaning known only to Christians at the time. Today, we still sing that song, but many people are unaware of the meaning.

Here broken down for you are the 12 days.

On the first day of Christmas . . . The "True Love" one hears in the song is not a smitten boy or girlfriend, but Jesus Christ, because truly Love was born on Christmas Day. The partridge in the pear tree also represents Him because that bird is willing to sacrifice its life, if necessary, to protect its young by feigning injury and the tree represents wood to make a cross.

On the second day of Christmas . . . The two turtle doves represent the Old and New Testaments.

On the thrid day of Christmas . . . Three French hens stood for faith, hope, and love

On the fourth day of Christmas . . . Four calling birds serve as reminders for the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

On the fifth day of Christmas . . . Five golden rings act as the first five books of the Old Testament, which describe man's fall into sin and the great love of God in sending a Savior.

On the sixth day of Christmas . . . Six geese a-laying correspond to the six days of creation.

On the seventh day of Christmas . . . Seven swans a-swimming assume the role of the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit-----Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

On the eighth day of Christmas . . . Eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes

On the ninth day of Christmas . . . Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit-----Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness Goodness, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Self-control.

On the tenth day of Christmas . . . The ten lords a-leaping speak for the Ten Commandments.

On the eleventh day of Christmas . . . The eleven pipers piping play the part of the eleven faithful Apostles.

On the twelfth day of Christmas . . . The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in The Apostles' Creed.

So you can see it is much more than a song!

Here are a book you can get to share the story of the 12 days of Christmas with your kids
