Jackie's Journey "What Challenge?"

Have you been shopping lately?  Fall merchandise is everywhere!  Halloween, Thanksgiving and even Christmas ornaments are taking over store aisles. We are in the middle of August, celebrating Labor Day week-end!  it’s not even September! Our children are just returning to school after a summer full of activities. This is definitely pushing the envelope for me…Thanksgiving and Christmas ride on the heels of Halloween!

 Included in “The Princess Parable Series”, were two seasonal books.  “A Royal Christmas to Remember” and “A Royal Easter Story” were written to give our princesses the opportunity to  show their true princess character by opening their hearts to others when their lives were being personally challenged and circumstances around them were chaotic.

I am a mom, whose little princesses found their lives enmeshed with ours in a ministry far outside the norm…tangled in the dense jungles of the Darien, living among an indigenous group of Kuna Indians.  The village was as remote as you can imagine and the culture far removed from their own.   It gave “off the grid” new definition. Reality gripped us daily, as our hearts were challenged to reach out for these who had yet to hear the name of Jesus.

 Although the girls in “The Princess Parables” series lived in a palace, the challenges were there.  Learning to count the cost for the benefit of others was clearly understood and practiced through the teaching of the series and lives of each princess. In “The Royal Christmas to Remember”,  the girls are surrounded by glittering gifts, a huge Christmas tree in the parlor, sparkling candles, and a dramatic night sky with one star bigger than all the others! 

 A sudden rap at the door of the castle puts the girls and the kingdom on immediate alert! Will a marauding band of outlaws ruin the princesses perfect Christmas Eve?  Life takes on new perspective when threatened by reality!  Alertness is the awareness that we are being stalked by a deadly enemy. “Set a strong guard about your outward senses; these are Satan’s landing places, especially the eye and the ear.” Wm. Gurnall

 As we face the needs around us and the challenges and commercialism of the pending seasons, “take heed and beware of covetousness; for a man’s life consists not in abundance of the things which he possesses.”Luke 12:15  Like the princesses, our true character is hanging in the balance of how we focus on the challenges at hand and how we see the need of others.

Do you experience emotional drain or depression by trying to act enthusiastic when you feel anything, but?  I have always associated energy with enthusiasm.  I lived with a man for 60 years that had boundless energy and his enthusiasm was outrageous and contagious! We, moms, encounter  it at our children’s soccer games as we stand and cheer them on or in an auditorium where our little princess is performing…

 In the Princess Parable Series each princess had her own source of energy (their names are Grace, Hope, Faith, Charity and Joy) that expressed itself in never-ending momentum.

Enthusiasm turns ordinary actions into extraordinary achievements. Jim Elliot wrote, ”Whoever you are, be all there.  Live to the hilt every situation you believe to be the will of God.”  Abraham Lincoln once said, “When I hear a man preach, I like to see him act as if he were fighting bees!” Biblically speaking, enthusiasm is God’s energy in my spirit expressing itself through my mind, will and emotions. The provision HE gives for us to be “fervent in spirit”. Rom. 12:9-11

 Am I energized and inspired by God today?

If any people ought to radiate passion, joy and enthusiasm…we should!

 Then,  I guess the question is, “Why aren’t I?’ “ What should I be enthusiastic about? How do I become a zealous Influencer for good?”  Genuine enthusiasm is not something we generate on our own.  It is the harmony we have with God when our spirit is expressing the joy of our soul.  How fervent am I about the things that have eternal value?” 

 What and who do I get excited about?  Do I look for it by pursuing social media, etc.… more than the Word of God? Am I zealous toward God, His Word, prayer, good works?  Am I “exceedingly glad” when I am spoken evil of? Matt. 5: 12  Do I, like Paul,  “pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches,  in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses?” I Cor. 12: 10

 Am I an example or an excuse in my responses to life’s situations?

 Enthusiasm is the by-product of having a life purpose that is worth dying for.

Jackie's Journey "The Price of Freedom!"

“We hold these truths to be self-evident:  That all men created equal,

that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,

that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

 We are all familiar with these words but, not so well-known, the concluding words of the Declaration of Independence reads, “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred Honor.”  Fifty-six signatures of great patriots follow these profound words. These were the American heroes to the core!

 And what did they get for pledging their lives, fortunes and honor for our country? 

·      Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died.

·      Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

·      Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

·      Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy.  He sold his home and property to pay his debts and died in rags.

·      Thomas McKean was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.  He served in Congress without pay and his family was kept in hiding.  His possessions were taken from him and poverty was his reward.

·      Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

·      At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr. noted that the British General Cornwalls had taken over his home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire.  The home was destroyed and Nelson died bankrupt.

·      Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.  The enemy jailed his wife and she died within a few months.

·      John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying.  Their 13 children fled for their lives.  His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste.  For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.  A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.  Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

Such were the stories and sacrifice of the great Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. These great men were not wild-eyed, rebellious ruffians.  They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security…but they valued liberty more!

 So… this July 4th, as we celebrate our freedoms with family and friends,

take a few minutes to silently thank these founding fathers

who paid such a great price for America’s freedom?

 Freedom is never free!
