Jackie's Journey "Life's Enquiries!"

I am the mom of two princesses, who now, each, have young knights and princesses of their own.  It was important to me, as a young mom, that my girls understood the Four Imperative Life Enquiries (Ravi Zacharias) that demand a response.  All creation cries out for an answer to these four crucial questions about life.

Most young moms are so busy and preoccupied with the “success” and safety (riots, shootings, child trafficking, internet interruptions on school study websites with pornography, false teachings, etc.) of their child that these four are often not addressed and when they leave home their young knights and princesses are ill-equipped to survive the worldly pressures, let alone lead the way, as a prepared soldier for a lost generation.

 We are inundated with social media and a multitude of ways that will readily educate our children incorrectly, and the home values are side-stepped by influences that are strategically programmed to the detriment of our young, impressionable heritage. 

 Have we dropped the ball??

 Young men and women of this generation are gasping for air, as they face the uncertain road ahead…unprepared and unaware.  So much emphasis has been placed on the temporal, rather than the eternal. The fruit we discern in the lives of our young prince and princesses is the obvious revelation of our neglect.  

 What do you see when you look around?  What do you hear?  Do your children listen to you with kind respect when you speak or do they roll their eyes and look for an escape? Are your children an inspiration or a discouragement to you?  Do they respond to their siblings with the purposed intention of making their brother or sister more successful or is there blatant competition, belittling and discord?  Is there a joyful attitude or a demanding one in your home?  Do you find your prince or princess interested in eternal things or focused on temporal values?  

 I am observing this new generation that will one day lead with the cross of Christ or will be lost to follow the world in discontentment.  Have the four life enquiries been addressed in your home?  Are the questions that all of us seek been answered to satisfy and settle our souls?

 1)    What is the origin of the universe, the world and us?

2)    What is the meaning of Life?

3)    What is morality and does it concern us?

4)    What is our destiny?

 Has your prince or princess found a safe place in you to easily talk about these imperatives?  Do you have the answers?  The Word of God is very explicit in the clarity of explanation to satisfy these probing questions. Is your child alert to the importance of implanting the truth and answers from God’s Word? Have you talked about these four goals and some thoughts on how to address and reach them?  How do you see the need of your child?

How do your children read you when they witness

 the way you address life and these four imperatives? 

Will they be ready?

 Will you join me in preparing yourself and this next generation 

with the answers for the obstacles of life they will encounter?

Jackie's Journey "Gratefully Disillusioned!"

Since my mother’s passing in June, I, along with my three sisters, have had the privilege of walking through her thoughts, getting her Estate in order.  I am finding a wealth of information about her “seasoned” heart and my heart has responded to the love expressed in her times of trial, rejection and failure!

 C. S. Lewis once defined history as “the long terrible story of man trying to find happiness apart from God”.  The secret of a satisfied heart is NOT the pursuit of satisfaction or happiness…they are the by-products.  Discovering God, HIS path of obedience and HIS love in actual practice is the basis of genuine growth, absolute gratefulness and joy in life.

 Discouragement often accompanies times of trial, rejection and failure. “For you have tried us, O God; you have refined us as silver is refined.  You brought us into the net; you laid an oppressive burden on us, you made men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water, yet YOU brought us out into a place of abundance.” Psa. 66:10-12

 I am reminded of the way God works to bring new release,

greater fulfillment, abundance and growth.  It is usually wrapped in the package of truth…

The more desperate the trial, the greater the growth!

 A while back, my life was completely disillusioned by a person very close to me that had always demonstrated loyalty and trust.  My attention was instantly drawn to the distress and directness of the accusations against me. I felt that “ person riding over my head”! 

 I kept hearing the words…God is not interested in helping us maintain 

a sense of worth  independent of HIM.

 I accepted temporarily an “oppressive burden” and knew the “fire and water” was surely inevitable. God “arranges” circumstances…(even, and especially in our failures), to break through our resistance until we honestly acknowledge and accept our need for HIM alone! Every other love, than God’s, is limited by some degree of distance, hesitation or distrust.

 I was then, and am still now, daily challenged to focus on how HE sees me and the treasure chest of truths on what delights HIS heart and NOT on the disillusionments and disappointments of life.  

Greater growth…greater trial.

 Trials come to help me reach my chosen goal, even though it sometimes frustrates my surface desires…therefore, I’m going on record to say…I welcome it!  Tribulation is God’s fastest road to patience, character, hope, confidence, genuine love…etc.!  In these days of confusion, riots and unrest, I continue to rest in a simple quiet purpose of heart…asking God for a celebration in the form of exuberance! (Antselvania)

 God continues to answer my prayer…I am not too old to serve, too seasoned to teach, too stubborn to learn, too weak to lead, too confounded to be productive…etc.  

 I am in perfect position for growth!!

Jackie's Journey "Victim or Victor??"

Someone mentioned to me recently that the angels don’t read minds, but they do hear what we say and being “fellow servants” with us for doing God’s will, they listen for assignments that will glorify God, as we speak. Since I am a chatterbox and love words, I started thinking about what comes out of my mouth!  

 An example… How do I receive a complement?  A few days ago, a kind lady in Costco said, “I love your hair.” Now…a smile and simple “thank-you” is a polite and sane response.  However, that was NOT my response… I answered, “Oh, really? I appreciate that because the rain and humidity today has turned my hair into Raggedy Annie!”  Did I encourage this lady with my gratefulness? Not likely!  We can tame Shamu, the whale, but we can’t tame our own tongue!  

 “See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!  

And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity;

the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles

the entire body and sets on fire the course of our life…!” James 3

 Did you know that the tongue holds the power of life and death? Pro. 18: 21   Your words, your dreams and your thoughts have power to create conditions in your life.  What you speak about, you can bring about!

 If you keep saying you can’t stand another day of lockdown, you might find yourself in a much worse circumstance.

If you keep saying you can’t stand another day of homeschool and noisy kids, be careful what you wish for.

If you keep saying you can’t stand your body, your body can become sick.

If you keep saying you can’t stand your car, your car could be stolen or just stop operating.

If you keep saying you’re broke, guess what?  You’ll always be broke.

If you keep saying you can’t trust this person or that person, you will always find someone in your life to hurt and betray you.

If you keep saying you can’t find a job, you will remain unemployed.

If you keep saying you can’t find someone to love you or believe in you, your very thought will attract more experiences to confirm your beliefs.

If you keep talking about a divorce or break-up in a relationship, then you might end up with it.

 Turn your thoughts and conversations around to be positive and power packed with faith, hope, love and action!  Phil. 4: 8

 We are not victims (unless we choose to be!); 

we are Victors!

 Watch your Thoughts…they become words.

Watch your Words…they become actions.

Watch your Actions…they become habits.

Watch your Habits…they become character.

Watch your Character…for it becomes your Destiny.

Jackie's Journey "As I Think...so Am I!"

This little lady-in-the-making is Olivia…her thoughts are being formed!

 “As a woman thinks in her heart so is she” encompasses the whole of our being and touches every condition and circumstance of our life.  We are literally what we think!  In the armory of thought we forge the weapons by which we make or break ourselves.  We women are looking for a way to control…well, here is a good one…take control of your thoughts!  Become the master of your thought life.

 Good thoughts never produce bad consequences; bad thoughts never produce good results.  “…a prudent woman gives thought to her steps.” Pro. 14:15  

 The mind is like a spring garden.  When cultivated and cared for or allowed to run wild with little thought or attention; either way… it will produce fruit.  Fruit that reproduces after like kind.  Olivia has a mommy whose thoughts produce good fruit and she is watching her mommy.

 What are the thoughts of your heart?

Selfishness, envy, jealousy, competitive spirit 

or service, love, joy, peace?

What fruit are you reproducing in the lives 

of your prince and princesses?

 Until our thoughts are linked with purpose there is no intelligent accomplishment. Absence of purpose leaves the door wide open to fall prey to fear, worry, and self-pity, all of which lead to failure, unhappiness and loss.  Maintaining “thought-control” frees us “to think with purpose and hence, to enter the ranks of those who only recognize failure as one of the path-ways to attainment; who make all conditions serve them, and who think strongly, attempt fearlessly, and accomplish masterfully.” James Allen

  “…the Lord knows the thoughts of man.  For the Word of God… judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.  Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight”. Psa. 94: 11; Heb. 4:12

 I don’t know about you, but my earnest prayer this morning is…

 “Search me, O God, and know my heart;

test me and know my anxious thoughts.

See if there is any offensive way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.” Ps. 139: 23

Jackie's Journey "Living an Illusion?"

‘Take My yoke upon you and learn of me…!” Matt. 11:29

How would you describe your Christian walk?  Up and down, peaks and valleys?  Good days and bad days?   Would you characterize your spiritual life as vibrant and free or continually battling your self-life (your personal rights, depression, unresolved relationships, entitlement…)?                                        

 Are you living a “Christian” illusion?

 If you want to learn of me, put your head in the yoke!

 What?!  No way!  Who does that?

 WHY… I’D HAVE TO GIVE UP MY FREEDOM AND SUBMIT

TO THE OTHER PERSON IN THE YOKE!  

 ARE YOU CRAZY???

 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and

I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn

from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you

will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and

my burden light”!  Matt. 11:28-30

The Church will instruct us

The Bible will inform us

Prayer will empower and direct us.

But only…The Yoke will teach us how to live

 and respond “in the Spirit” to life situations

on a continual basis.

 Ezekiel 37:1-6 is a lesson on a “valley of dry bones”.  What does that have to do with my spiritual walk, you ask?  Lots!  Spiritual deadness is a permeating and engulfing phenomenon in our culture, churches, relationships, homes and hearts.  It sort of swallows us up like a tsunami!  Biblical Christianity is defined by our consistent attitudes in life practice.

 We carry seeds of decay through disobedience and rebellion toward God (i.e. anger, jealousy, self-love…).  We have adopted patterns through wrong influences and teachings (friends, music, ungodly worldviews, Hollywood, social media...).  Maybe we have been a believer, since we cannot remember, BUT there are places where we really do NOT know our own need.  Our life has become an illusion of biblical Christianity.  There is a measure of self-confidence and pride built on our bones…

 God says, “I will make breath enter you and you will come to life”.  God works out of Death!   Death to self!  His desire is to breathe life into our dead bones, moment by moment.     No illusion here…

 An illusion is a lie; it is not real.  Disillusionment with our daily walk is a gift of God… a challenge to enter into the yoke with Him and His rest... learning from His gentle and humble heart.

 There are two yokes:

                                1) The yoke with Christ and righteous purposes

 2) The yoke with Satan and his kill, steal and destroy 

 purposes Jn.10: 10

We choose who is in the yoke with us with every choice we make!

 My husband asked me if every choice I make is a spiritual one?  For the life of me, I could not think of a single one that is not!  Can you think of one that is not a deliberate choosing of one kingdom or the other?  

 By taking Christ’s yoke upon us, we yield our right to do as we please, and we learn the wishes and commands of Christ our leader.

 God is not nearly concerned with what we are going through as He is with our response to what we go through.  His chief concern is that our attitude becomes consistent with His Son.  The question is:  

Who do you choose to be in the yoke with you today?  

 There are only two choices!  

 Choose wisely, young mothers, little ones are

watching and stepping into the same yoke with you!

“It was for freedom that Christ set us free:

therefore, keep standing firm and do not be subject again

to a yoke of slavery (law/sin).”   Galatians 5: 1

Jackie's Journey "Lockdown Lesson!"

I don’t know about you, but I am having a very profitable journey during these months of slowing my pace and listening more fervently.  I have had the opportunity to read a few books that I have wanted to pull off the shelf for years!  Time seems to turn to liquid when I am not scheduled by the hour.  I do miss the personal contact with others, but He has pulled me under his wing and decided I would listen and learn better “locked-down”. 

 A few observations…I have never realized that the angels are listening to the words I speak.  Acts 7: 53 says that the law was given by disposition of the angels.  “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation.”  Hebrews 1: 13, 14  If I am an heir of salvation then they are here to minister for me!  Angels are our “fellow servants, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book.” Rev. 22: 8,9 

 Angels are listening to what I say, because what I say has a tremendous effect on what they do!  

 If you give voice (pray) to that word of promise, prayer for the lost or a God-given command, the angels are listening to what you say and they will hearken to your voice. This, of course, is conditional…if you are in total agreement with God and His will, then the angel’s assignment is to make sure that what you are saying from His Word is completed.       

 KEY:   When we Pray – we are seeking an answer; we do not need to rehearse the problem!  

Praying for the salvation of other’s is always in God’s will!

 “So shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth:

it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish

that which I please and it will prosper the thing where I sent it.” 

 Isa. 55:11

 Why we should pray biblically?

It’s important because:

 GOD’S DESIRE WILL LEAD TO OUR PURPOSE.

HIS PURPOSE WILL LEAD US TO HIS WILL.

HIS WILL LEAD US TO HIS WISDOM.

HIS WISDOM WILL LEAD US INTO RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HIS ABUNDANT SUPPLY AND PROTECTION.

HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS WILL FILL US WITH HIS SPIRIT AND KEEP US FROM THE DEPTH OF SIN AND RUINATION.

HIS SPIRIT WILL PRODUCE ALL OF THIS IN US AND ENABLE US TO PLEASE HIM.

 WHATEVER WE SOW…WE REAP!

LISTEN, MOM’S…PRAYING BIBLICALLY IS SOWING GOD’S PURPOSE 

INTO WHAT THE 

NEXT GENERATION WILL REAP!

BUT, YOU ASK…WHY DOES IT SEEM PRAYER IS SELDOM ANSWERED?

 WE WANT GOD TO CHANGE HIS DESIRES AND BLESS OURS!

WE WANT GOD TO CONSIDER OUR PURPOSE AND MAKE IT WORK!

WE WANT GOD TO BLESS OUR WILL!

WE WANT GOD TO USE OUR WORLDLY WISDOM!

WE WANT GOD TO GIVE UP HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS FOR OUR SELFISHNESS!

 GOD REQUIRES AN INITIAL DENIAL OF SELF, DEATH DAILY TO SELFISH DESIRES AND A DETERMINATION TO FOLLOW THE INVISIBLE GOD. LUKE 9:23

 IF THIS IS NOT OUR DAILY PRACTICE 

THEN THERE IS NO NEED TO PRAY 

FOR OUR DESIRES, WANTS AND LONGINGS.

 IT IS GOD’S RIGHT TO RULE OVER HIS PEOPLE AND HIS UNIVERSE!

Jackie's Journey "Covid-19...Listen to the Heros!"

My husband was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne.   He doesn’t see heights. In the many jumps he made while in the Army, there was always the moment where he made the choice to walk through the door of fear and…jump!  I am no stranger to fear and the Covid-19 pandemic initially called to mind the fact that “I am no stranger to fear”.

 “Today many people are living in the bondage of fear.  In a recent study, a psychiatrist said that the greatest problems facing his patients was fear.  Afraid of Alzheimer’s, dementia, committing suicide, being alone, or afraid of heart disease, cancer, disaster, plague or death.  We are becoming a nation of fearful people.  Down through the centuries in times of trouble, temptation, trial, bereavement and crisis, God has brought courage to the hearts of those who love Him.  The Bible is crowded with assurances of God’s help and comfort in every kind of trouble which might cause fears to arise in the human heart.  Today the Christian can come to the Scriptures with full assurance that God is going to deliver the person who puts his trust and confidence in God.  Christians can look into the future with promise, hope and joy, and without fear, discouragement or despondency.”  Billy Graham

 I am not unfamiliar with fear.  However, God has faithfully proved Himself to me over and over, and my trust in His will for my life supersedes and replaces my fear with faith.  Early on in my Christian life I was forced to walk through the door of fear repeatedly, only to see it dissipate!  The statement that “God’s sovereignty and His control is either true or it’s not true.  If it’s not true, we’d better forget about God.  But if it is true and we accept God’s revelation of Himself, our faith enables us to enjoy and rest in the certainty of His providence”. Paul Little

 God’s plan and divine purpose is always wrapped in our acknowledging His walking with us through whatever it is we are facing.  He’s got it wired and it is for our best.  “This is sane, wholesome, practical, working faith: first, that it is a person’s business to do the will of God; second, that God takes on Himself the special care of that person; and third, therefore that person ought never to be afraid of anything.” George MacDonald

 We are living in a world in which God has the last word…

 “Do not fear, for I am with you; 

Do not anxiously look about you for I am your God. 

 I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,

 Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41: 10

And she has no fear of the future.”

Jackie's Journey "Surreptitious Scorpion!"

Before we arrived in Panama we had seen the handiwork of the Kuna Indians and were amazed at their beautiful Mola creations. They would take the jungle and its inhabitants and meticulously sew them into intricate three-layer tapestries.   We would soon discover the secrets of these pieces of art!

When challenged for tribal missions the unknowns were the most difficult to adjust to…and the unknowns were many and continual.  Honestly, there were more unknowns in our jungle life than I could ever have imagined while stateside…and trust me, I thought my fear had covered everything conceivable in preparation for our missionary service!

 The word hope in the Bible is a term of certainty.  The Greek word translated “hope” in the New Testament is elpizo, which means, “to anticipate with confident expectation.”  Uncertainty and the unknown are bedfellows!  They helped develop my capacity to be a woman of hope and not despair.

 Arriving in the last frontier of Panama…the Darien Gap, I stepped over the threshold of our new home.  This dense jungle is said to be one of the last wild frontiers in the world!

 Had I not heard this before arriving??

 It was dark and wet.  The mud-packed floor was cold!  Ralph had poured one cement floor in the house and realized it was not a viable option to do more considering the number of weighty bags of cement that would have to be carried two days from Panama City by banana boat and, then, another day upriver by dugout to reach the shoreline of our village.

 Kim, our youngest daughter, was a nursing baby when we first arrived. As the months rapidly slipped away from us, we knew she would soon be crawling.  Anticipating his daughter’s first attempts, her Dad found woodcutters from Colombia to carve a wood floor from the jungle.

 He also brought in cats from Panama City to discourage the creepy crawlers, skittering mice, and flying bats in the house at night!  Kim loved the cats!  Right on cue, before the floor was finished, Kim began crawling and she was fast! She chased the cats and disappeared out of sight every chance she got!

One morning her little friends were circling our bed in a very agitated manner.  Kim was as excited as the cats and crawling right behind them!  Swiftly snatching her up into my arms, I caught a glimpse of something large moving under the bed!  I was hoping it was a bird that had lost its way…

  Not certain what had entered the house unaware, I instinctively picked up the biggest and heaviest object I had close at hand…Ralph’s size 14 Combat Boot!  With one fell swoop I smashed the largest scorpion I had ever seen.  Its crushed tail extended beyond the end of the boot!

Alertness is learning to foresee dangers and fully understand the consequences!  No problem here…I was on alert!

 This, of course, includes creepy crawlers but also being alert to the dangers of our words, actions, attitudes, and thoughts!  My thoughts could never have visualized all the variables that became my almost daily occurrence.  Being alert to what was taking place around me was a practice that became inherent in our jungle life.  

 Being watchful and prompt to meet danger or an emergency is the definition of alertness.  Learning to pay attention to the lessons God was teaching me through the experiences He was bringing my way were invaluable to my spiritual growth.  My anxiety, resistance and need to be “in control” often hindered His growing me up!

Are you aware of opportunities God gives you to witness 

and encourage others to grow spiritually?

What is the last problem you could have avoided 

by being alert to danger?

Jackie's Journey "Final Farewell??"

Kim, my constant companion in those days…

“On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.  Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. 

 My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.”

Psalm 63: 6,7,8.

 The Darien is an earthy, steamy environment of thick rainforest.  The humidity was thick enough to slice and the heat was barely bearable.  With our return to Pucuro after my major surgery came the responsibilities that we had left three months prior.  Our partners, Jay and Sue Gunsteens and their family, had gone on furlough and returned to the States. My strength had not returned and I tired very easily.  I started resting in the afternoon and within a few months I was having difficulty getting up at all.  

 Ralph had fastened a battery tape recorder to the wall above the bed so I could listen to the Book of Psalms.  They brought me great comfort as I listened to David in his distress and God’s continual deliverance.  God became my refuge and consolation in ways I had never experienced before.  The isolation from civilization, the absence of medical convenience and the sense I was dying was exchanged for finding Him more than enough to meet all my apprehension. 

 How does God meet you in a tight spot?

  The daily opening of the clinic, delivering babies in the night, homeschooling Christina, the care of toddler Kimberly, the linguistic work and the daily opportunity to share Christ… all brought profound joy.  In spite of my physical state, my circumstances brought life-lessons I would never have recognized, experienced or understood apart from this plan God had for me.

 “If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out,

  We kept thinking if we could just persevere a few more months we would see our Kuna family in a spiritual place where we were comfortable leaving for an extended furlough and seek medical help.  We did not want both missionary families among our tribe to be on furlough at the same time.

 The people would come and sit with me as I lay in bed.  Nangel, pictured beloow with Ralph, the village midwife, grandma, and precious new Christian came daily and I looked forward to her visit.  One day she kept saying to the other women gathered around my bed, “Purkwis tani!”.  Usually, that phrase is reserved for those who are dying.  It is translated, “Death comes!”  I remember thinking…it had been over a year since the surgery and I must look horrendously bad!  As a young mother, death seemed illusive, an impossibility…until my health failed and God began to speak to me gently, resolutely and unmistakably through His Word…

Did Nangel see something I couldn’t? 

 A few weeks later a couple on the field committee, Don and Pat Barger, came in by plane for a day visit. The look on their faces when they entered our home told me that what Nangel had said might be true!  They immediately encouraged us to leave the village with them and to take an early furlough and get medical help in the States.  I had one small round mirror interior and I had watched my face become thin and gaunt over the months, but I did not realize how tiny I was all over!

 I will forever be grateful for their divine intervention in our lives that day.  After a few days and friendly persuasion, we packed a few things, said our good-byes and headed to Scripps Diagnostic Hospital in the States.

 As the plane lifted into the sky, I caught a glimpse of the entire village waving to us in what Scripps confirmed could have been our final farewell!  

 Do you hear His voice daily speaking to you through Scripture? 

Gently?  Resolutely?  Unmistakably?

We say we want equality…but we also want special treatment…right?

 Someone recently sent these 6 deadly terms to me:

1)    “FINE:  This is the word women use to end an argument when she knows she is right and your better half needs to shut up.

2)    NOTHING:  means something and your husband needs to be worried.

3)    GO AHEAD: this is a dare, not permission… do not do it.

4)    WHATEVER:  A woman’s way of saying back off.

5)    THAT’S OKAY:  Woman is thinking long and hard on how and when you will pay for your mistake.

6)    Bonus Word: WOW!: this is not a compliment. She’s amazed that one person could be so stupid.”

This is meant to be humorous but, 

does this seem logical to you?

Woman’s Logic is:

1.     Personal

2.     Emotional

3.     Identity with family, in home

4.     Demonstrates love by loving child’s father

5.     Thinks relationships

6.     Details important

7.     Communicates for fellowship and fulfillment/ facts unimportant

Man’s Logic is:

1.     Impersonal

2.     Mechanical

3.     Identity with work; outside of home

4.     Demonstrates love by loving child’s mother

5.     Thinks provision; protection

6.     Not interested in details/ “bottom line it”

7.     Communicates for information exchange/ facts are important not fellowship

8.     Woman is to complete him/ He does NOT want to be completed

 Often parents then pass their immature, incomplete, unrefined personas

onto their family and expect them to adjust to it. 

 There is only one logic that, if followed, will produce mature and complete children equipped to live in this perverse world.  One logic that will reap the reward of blessing from the only logic that really counts!

 God’s Logic:

1.     You give all you have to become rich

2.     You must lose your life to find it

3.      You humble yourself to be exalted

4.     You love your enemies, not hate them

5.     You be kind to those who misuse you

6.     You take the log out of your own eye first

7.     You study the law to find your sin
