Jackie's Journey "Troubled Waters!!"

Troubled times? New Covid outbreaks?  This is all we hear!  

Fear everywhere!  What is the truth?  What can we believe?  

What can we tell our children? 

 I was raised a Lutheran and attended parochial school until the eighth grade.  I have wonderful memories growing up surrounded by pastors and teachers that opened up the Word every morning in class and introduced us to the simple principles of knowing God.  When it came to “faith”, I struggled to understand how it worked.

“Faith is not what some people think it is.  Their human dream is a delusion.  Because they observe that faith is not followed by good works or a better life, they fall into error, even though they speak and hear much about faith.  ‘Faith is not enough’, they say. ‘You must do good work’s; you must be devout to be saved.’  They think that, when you hear the gospel, you start working, creating by your own strength a thankful heart which says, ‘I believe.’  That is what they think true faith is.  But, because this is a human idea, a dream, the heart never learns anything from it, so it does nothing and rebirth doesn’t come from this ‘faith’, either.

 Instead, faith is God’s work in us, that changes us and gives new birth from God. Jn.1: 13 It kills the old Adam and makes us completely different people.  It changes our hearts, our spirits, our thoughts and all our powers.  It brings the Holy Spirit with it.  Yes, it is a living, creative, active and powerful thing, this faith.  Faith cannot help doing good works constantly.  It doesn’t stop to ask if good works ought to be done, but before anyone asks, it already has done them and continues to do them without ceasing.  Anyone who does not do good works in this manner is an unbeliever.  He stumbles around and looks for faith and good works, even though he does not know what faith and good works are.  Yet, he gossips and chatters about faith and good works with many words.

What will we tell them?

FAITH is a living, bold trust in God’s grace, so certain of God’s favor that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it!  Such confidence and knowledge of God’s grace makes you happy, joyful and bold in your relationship to God and all creatures.  The Holy Spirit makes this happen through faith.  Because of it, you freely, willingly, and joyfully do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things, love and praise God who has shown you such grace (no entitlements or expectations!).  Thus, it is just as impossible to separate faith and works as it is to separate heat and light from fire.  Therefore, watch out for your own false ideas and guard against good-for-nothing gossips, who think they’re smart enough to define faith and works, but really are the greatest of fools.”

Genesis 6:5 gives us a clear understanding of our desperate need for faith and regeneration.

“The Lord saw the the wickedness of man was great on the earth,

and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

 During this time of Thanksgiving and rehearsing the birth of our Lord and Savior,

will you ask God to work FAITH in you…?

Jackie's Journey "A Promise and A Possibility!"

 Moms, have you thought about the culture our young children are growing into? Our faith is marginalized, immorality is expected and acceptable, socialism is fashionable, life is under attack, our Christian values and religious freedoms are deemed outdated and offensive. 

 “Time cannot be expanded, accumulated, mortgaged, hastened, or retarded.  It just keeps on…”

I usually begin my introspection regarding “time” after Christmas when facing the New Year! However, I can’t stop thinking about my seven grandchildren and how quickly time has passed from the day in the hospital when each one was placed in my arms until today when I look up (they are all way taller than I am!) and realize how adult they all are!

 They were tiny little ones not too long ago, just a blink, wrapped in a promise and a possibility not yet realized.  Time has flown and every call or contact is a special blessing, as they each find their own voice of influence.  They are the declaration for the next generation.  

They are our future.

 I am currently the grandmother of three university students.  Each one has been sent as a missionary to colleges around the country.  They are courageous and are standing alone for what they believe!  Our oldest granddaughter is at USC, our second granddaughter is at Biola and our third, my grandson is at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA.  My fourth grandson will graduate high school in May and he, too, will be gone!  

I never dreamed that years ago in the jungles of Panama that I would have the opportunity to have lived locally with all my grandchildren. Our hearts desire was to serve the Kuna Tribe in the Darien until…forever!  God had a different plan for us and our time here in the states became planting Spanish-speaking churches and discipling leadership to move on to a different location and start another church.  We have seen God establish seven churches (Panama, Mexico, and in Southern California).  This has enabled us to be near our girls and their families.

 The challenge is to not drop the ball at this stage!

 As moms, we see God, family and responsibility through a lens that is often clouded by information being flooded into our vision through social media and what others are saying or have lived or experienced.  We see them as examples and take their teaching as gospel truth.  Because our biblical worldview is not being fed by time in the Word and knowing the heart and mind of God, we are often misled and our children suffer the consequences.

 Someone left this on my desk last week and it seemed so simplistic that I set it to one side. A few day later, while sitting at my desk, out of the corner of my eye…I glanced at it again and grasped the two world-views being compared!  Take a look:

We demonstrate what we value by what we give our attention and affection to.  Dedicated moms know where their children are all the time.  If one is missing, even for a moment…panic sets in.  We value our little ones!  

The object of our devotion reveals

what is important to us.

 I walked into the Mall over a month ago and was greeted by sparkling lights, festive music, fully decorated Christmas trees of every size and color, and the warm scent of cinnamon and pine wafting in the air…it was October 1st!   Thanksgiving was six weeks away!   Christmas was two months away!

 The materialistic focus had begun and the most celebrated event of the year was lost in a world of themed decorations, color coordinated ornaments, hearth garlands and welcoming wreaths ready for our front doors…an obvious demonstration of what the world values.  I looked in vain for a Nativity scene.  Where was the real object of our celebration…our “Reason for the Season”…Jesus Christ?  

 “Christ is not valued at all unless He is valued above all!”

In our seasonal book, “A Royal Christmas to Remember”, the princesses found that although the entire village had been ransacked by a band of marauding outlaws, they were amazed to find the Nativity scene had been left unscathed! They stood gazing down at the baby Jesus and thanked God that HE had come into the world and that no one was injured in the brutal attack. Their focus was on the Savior who had come to save and bring peace. Regardless of the circumstances around them, their hearts were captured by the wonderful gift God gave us in His Son. They were filled with unspeakable joy.

“Christmas is not a myth, not a tradition, not a dream. It is a glorious reality. It is a time of joy. Bethlehem’s manger crib became the link that bound a lost world to a loving God. From that manger came a Man who not only taught us a new way of life, but also brought us into a new relationship with our Creator. Jackie's Journey "Monotony...is the Worst!"

Just wondering how you moms are doing with your life on hold and just a glimmer “at the end of the tunnel” that Covid might be finally coming to an end?? 

 Just an observation…to the degree a person is not developing her own ability toward a common objective… she will experience discouragement and boredom!  To offset the resulting monotony and to escape a sense of a meaningless life and a lack of purpose she finds herself pleasure seeking.  Discouragement, boredom and pleasure seeking are all signs we have set shortsighted goals or no goals at all.

 When Covid-19 set in, we, moms, prepared lofty goals and our intentions were good.  We had to make major adjustments!   I Thess. 5: 21 reminds us,  to “hold on to the good”… but good intentions are not enough to combat the lethargy of our spirit!  We are to avoid every kind of evil with the promise that “…God himself will purify us through and through.  He will keep our whole spirit, soul and body blameless… but the best part is,… “HE is faithful and HE will do it!”

 Hence…we have no excuse for being discouraged,

bored or having unfulfilled goals!

 “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong (woman) stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better.  The credit belongs to the (woman) who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends (herself) in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumphs of high achievement and who at the worst if (she) fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that (her) place will never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”  Theodore Roosevelt

 As moms, we are consumed with the desire to dare greatly in the lives of our husband, children and the success of our home.  We want to be the wife whose husband is admired and spoken well of at the gate because of our testimony and loving service.  We are living in a spiritual war zone and we can’t shelter warriors…we train them to prepare for battle and fight.  We have two goals…how do we reach a darkened, lost world and how do we heal a broken world.

 We aspire to carry His burden by being equipped to reach the lost and encourage the saved.   We teach our children to recognize the enemy and to keep their eyes on the Victor and Savior of our souls.  We pray and focus on eternal goals and teach our little prince and princesses to see God in circumstances and struggles with grateful hearts, as we set the example before them.  We read the Bible to them and teach them how to hear God’s voice.  We teach them to fear God and the consequence of sin.  

 There is no time to be world-weary or consumed with pleasure seeking.  We are pressed to dare greatly for the cause of the cross, following the One who actually knows where we are headed in this maze called life.  Inspired by His example we keep busy with the things on His heart and find our lives are filled, full and content.

looking for what God is going to do today?  

 Have your goals been shortsighted or are you on point?

Jackie's Journey "Life's Enquiries!"

I am the mom of two princesses, who now, each, have young knights and princesses of their own.  It was important to me, as a young mom, that my girls understood the Four Imperative Life Enquiries (Ravi Zacharias) that demand a response.  All creation cries out for an answer to these four crucial questions about life.

Most young moms are so busy and preoccupied with the “success” and safety (riots, shootings, child trafficking, internet interruptions on school study websites with pornography, false teachings, etc.) of their child that these four are often not addressed and when they leave home their young knights and princesses are ill-equipped to survive the worldly pressures, let alone lead the way, as a prepared soldier for a lost generation.

 We are inundated with social media and a multitude of ways that will readily educate our children incorrectly, and the home values are side-stepped by influences that are strategically programmed to the detriment of our young, impressionable heritage. 

 Have we dropped the ball??

 Young men and women of this generation are gasping for air, as they face the uncertain road ahead…unprepared and unaware.  So much emphasis has been placed on the temporal, rather than the eternal. The fruit we discern in the lives of our young prince and princesses is the obvious revelation of our neglect.  

 What do you see when you look around?  What do you hear?  Do your children listen to you with kind respect when you speak or do they roll their eyes and look for an escape? Are your children an inspiration or a discouragement to you?  Do they respond to their siblings with the purposed intention of making their brother or sister more successful or is there blatant competition, belittling and discord?  Is there a joyful attitude or a demanding one in your home?  Do you find your prince or princess interested in eternal things or focused on temporal values?  

 I am observing this new generation that will one day lead with the cross of Christ or will be lost to follow the world in discontentment.  Have the four life enquiries been addressed in your home?  Are the questions that all of us seek been answered to satisfy and settle our souls?

 1)    What is the origin of the universe, the world and us?

2)    What is the meaning of Life?

3)    What is morality and does it concern us?

4)    What is our destiny?

 Has your prince or princess found a safe place in you to easily talk about these imperatives?  Do you have the answers?  The Word of God is very explicit in the clarity of explanation to satisfy these probing questions. Is your child alert to the importance of implanting the truth and answers from God’s Word? Have you talked about these four goals and some thoughts on how to address and reach them?  How do you see the need of your child?

 the way you address life and these four imperatives?

Jackie's Journey "Gratefully Disillusioned!"

Since my mother’s passing in June, I, along with my three sisters, have had the privilege of walking through her thoughts, getting her Estate in order.  I am finding a wealth of information about her “seasoned” heart and my heart has responded to the love expressed in her times of trial, rejection and failure!

 C. S. Lewis once defined history as “the long terrible story of man trying to find happiness apart from God”.  The secret of a satisfied heart is NOT the pursuit of satisfaction or happiness…they are the by-products.  Discovering God, HIS path of obedience and HIS love in actual practice is the basis of genuine growth, absolute gratefulness and joy in life.

 Discouragement often accompanies times of trial, rejection and failure. “For you have tried us, O God; you have refined us as silver is refined.  You brought us into the net; you laid an oppressive burden on us, you made men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water, yet YOU brought us out into a place of abundance.” Psa. 66:10-12

 I am reminded of the way God works to bring new release,

greater fulfillment, abundance and growth.  It is usually wrapped in the package of truth…

The more desperate the trial, the greater the growth!

 A while back, my life was completely disillusioned by a person very close to me that had always demonstrated loyalty and trust.  My attention was instantly drawn to the distress and directness of the accusations against me. I felt that “ person riding over my head”! 

 I kept hearing the words…God is not interested in helping us maintain 

a sense of worth  independent of HIM.

 I accepted temporarily an “oppressive burden” and knew the “fire and water” was surely inevitable. God “arranges” circumstances…(even, and especially in our failures), to break through our resistance until we honestly acknowledge and accept our need for HIM alone! Every other love, than God’s, is limited by some degree of distance, hesitation or distrust.

 I was then, and am still now, daily challenged to focus on how HE sees me and the treasure chest of truths on what delights HIS heart and NOT on the disillusionments and disappointments of life.  

Greater growth…greater trial.

 Trials come to help me reach my chosen goal, even though it sometimes frustrates my surface desires…therefore, I’m going on record to say…I welcome it!  Tribulation is God’s fastest road to patience, character, hope, confidence, genuine love…etc.!  In these days of confusion, riots and unrest, I continue to rest in a simple quiet purpose of heart…asking God for a celebration in the form of exuberance! (Antselvania)

 God continues to answer my prayer…I am not too old to serve, too seasoned to teach, too stubborn to learn, too weak to lead, too confounded to be productive…etc.  

 I am in perfect position for growth!!

Jackie's Journey "Are You a Traumatized Citizen?"

I’ve been thinking about what it means to be an American citizen.  Just the title screams privilege and responsibility.  I was born an American citizen.  With it came all the parts that make this country so great.  To experience the privilege, its integrity must be preserved.  I have certain unalienable rights that come wrapped in responsibility. I have lived in a third world country and believe me, when I say, I am an American through and through, with pride of ownership!

  There is a description of another citizenship that I am a part of, that also, comes with privilege and responsibility.   I guess you could say I have dual-citizenship, like my daughter, Kim, who was born in Panama.  I was reading the responsibilities of that citizenship and those who “will live in the tent of the Lord” and “live on His holy hill”!  

 I’m no slacker, but this list in (Psalm 15 and Psalm 24:3-5) was an eye-opener, because it came with such promise!  The person who:

1.     Walks in integrity

2.     Works righteousness

3.     Speaks truth in his heart

4.     Does not slander with his tongue

5.     Does not do evil to his neighbor

6.     Does not take up a reproach against his friend

7.     Honors those who fear the Lord

8.     Swears to his own hurt and does not change

9.     Does not put out his money at interest

10.  Does not take a bribe against the innocent

 The promise for obedience is that

“he who does these things will NEVER be shaken!

 Sounds good to me!  In these days of world turmoil, we don’t need an earthquake to be shaken. There’s certainly enough going on around us, in just the unknowns, “to keep the pot stirred”!  

 This is a promise, given with love, provision and conditions…

I’m, earnestly, taking it seriously…

Jackie's Journey "Living an Illusion?"

‘Take My yoke upon you and learn of me…!” Matt. 11:29

How would you describe your Christian walk?  Up and down, peaks and valleys?  Good days and bad days?   Would you characterize your spiritual life as vibrant and free or continually battling your self-life (your personal rights, depression, unresolved relationships, entitlement…)?                                        

 Are you living a “Christian” illusion?

 If you want to learn of me, put your head in the yoke!

 What?!  No way!  Who does that?

 WHY… I’D HAVE TO GIVE UP MY FREEDOM AND SUBMIT

TO THE OTHER PERSON IN THE YOKE!  

 ARE YOU CRAZY???

 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and

I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn

from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you

will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and

my burden light”!  Matt. 11:28-30

The Church will instruct us

The Bible will inform us

Prayer will empower and direct us.

But only…The Yoke will teach us how to live

 and respond “in the Spirit” to life situations

on a continual basis.

 Ezekiel 37:1-6 is a lesson on a “valley of dry bones”.  What does that have to do with my spiritual walk, you ask?  Lots!  Spiritual deadness is a permeating and engulfing phenomenon in our culture, churches, relationships, homes and hearts.  It sort of swallows us up like a tsunami!  Biblical Christianity is defined by our consistent attitudes in life practice.

 We carry seeds of decay through disobedience and rebellion toward God (i.e. anger, jealousy, self-love…).  We have adopted patterns through wrong influences and teachings (friends, music, ungodly worldviews, Hollywood, social media...).  Maybe we have been a believer, since we cannot remember, BUT there are places where we really do NOT know our own need.  Our life has become an illusion of biblical Christianity.  There is a measure of self-confidence and pride built on our bones…

 God says, “I will make breath enter you and you will come to life”.  God works out of Death!   Death to self!  His desire is to breathe life into our dead bones, moment by moment.     No illusion here…

 An illusion is a lie; it is not real.  Disillusionment with our daily walk is a gift of God… a challenge to enter into the yoke with Him and His rest... learning from His gentle and humble heart.

 There are two yokes:

                                1) The yoke with Christ and righteous purposes

 2) The yoke with Satan and his kill, steal and destroy 

 purposes Jn.10: 10

We choose who is in the yoke with us with every choice we make!

 My husband asked me if every choice I make is a spiritual one?  For the life of me, I could not think of a single one that is not!  Can you think of one that is not a deliberate choosing of one kingdom or the other?  

 By taking Christ’s yoke upon us, we yield our right to do as we please, and we learn the wishes and commands of Christ our leader.

 God is not nearly concerned with what we are going through as He is with our response to what we go through.  His chief concern is that our attitude becomes consistent with His Son.  The question is:  

Who do you choose to be in the yoke with you today?  

 There are only two choices!  

 Choose wisely, young mothers, little ones are

watching and stepping into the same yoke with you!

“It was for freedom that Christ set us free:

therefore, keep standing firm and do not be subject again

to a yoke of slavery (law/sin).”   Galatians 5: 1

Jackie's Journey "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?"

God designed fear for our benefit.  Its designed purpose is to keep us from harm.  It is a warning system that we are about to try something that is beyond our known ability.  Our civilization would not be able to survive without fear.

 How do you view fear?  As a friend?

How much control does fear have over your life?

 Like everything good that was created for us to use and enjoy, fear was perverted at the fall of Adam, along with everything else.  “God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of Power, Love and Discipline!” II Tim. 1: 7   In its perversion, fear is used by Satan to control.  Fear of what people may think, fear to share our faith, fear of rejection, fear of old age, fear of the unknown, fear of the devil…all are responses to this control.  Fear eventually becomes a wall that leads to indifference. We become insensitive to its influence.  Parents use threats and fear to discipline their children into obedience.  Fear of rejection leads young people into bad social behavior (drugs, sex, pornography, alcohol…).  

 Fear has made a mockery of us!  It has left us in the prison of our imagination…the “what ifs” and “I give up” of life.  Rebellion and suicides are rampant in our society.  Anger is a common response to life’s situations.  We see it everywhere…in our homes, relationships, while driving…you know… there is always the angry person who attempts to control the crowd through fear. This ongoing virus is a good example of how fear is used to control the crowd…

 People fear responsibility.  My paratrooper husband tells me that the first step of training a soldier is knowledge of the enemy he has to overcome.  For our purposes, the question is:

 How do we learn to take control and use the enemy (Satan) for God’s glory?

(Satan’s only purpose is to exalt God!)

 Our job is to understand that everything in creation was intended for the purpose of using our hopes, dreams, talents, futures and abilities to extol God.  Any temptation to do otherwise, for whatever reason will end in defeat.  Satan, the created being, is no exception to this rule!  

 We are to fear two things ONLY…God and the consequence of sin. 

 Who we fear, will control us!
