Jackie's Journey "I Can Do It Myself!"

Shortly after daybreak, an arctic explorer stood at the base of an eight-thousand-foot mountain.  The temperature was thirty below zero.  He was about 600 miles from the North Pole, when suddenly, a strange feeling overcame him and he considered turning back.  His uneasiness was heightened  by the unusual pattern of tracks in the snow.  He quickly recognized that most of the prints belonged  to arctic wolves!

As he continued up the mountain, the wolf prints disappeared. However, he still sensed an eerie presence.  Something was watching him. Pulling himself up to the next snowy rise, the man was stunned by a rush of fur that flashed by his face! Wolves??  Polar Bear??

To his amazement it was a Musk Oxen.  The shaggy animals swiftly formed a circle, standing shoulder to shoulder, horns lowered and their young calves tucked inside the wall of protection.

The ravaging wolves had no recourse but to retreat.  There was power in numbers.  Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted another wolf that was now coming right for…him!  Only five feet away stood the huge wolf pack!  The wolves were no match for the combined protection that the musk oxen gave each other.   BUT the wolves were fearless against one man who tried to make it on his own…(condensed Bill Gothard material)

Do you know anyone who says, “I can do it myself?”  I think there is a little of that independent spirit in all of us.  We forget the danger of trying to make it on our own. Most of us are convinced we have it covered…no help needed in our decision-making process. The savage wolves in life are just waiting to pounce…they come in different forms, but the end result is all the same.  There is self-rejection, rebellion, guilt, bitterness, anger,  purposelessness, habits and addictions, peer dependence, financial bondage….

Understanding that the only safe place on this complex and confusing planet is to be wrapped inside the circle of the perfect will of God, walking in the light and truth of HIS Word.  This is our only hope. Facing the tomorrows independently of HIM is to invite the inevitable, like the arctic explorer.  None of us can do it alone…

Which wolves are after your soul?

Jackie's Journey "Decisions...Decisions!"

Once upon a time there were three bear cubs romping in a field. They stumble across a caribou  that the wolves had killed.  They energetically begin to sniff and help themselves to the warm meat, thinking the wolves were gone.  But they were hiding…waiting to attack!  Wolves run in packs and the littlest bear took the worst of the beating. Mama bear hears her cubs howling and instantly comes to the rescue.   The littlest cub, bleeding and yet determined, ignores the call of mom and runs back toward the meat again! Decisions…decisions…

For the second time, the mama bear exposes herself and the other cubs to danger.  The lead wolf draws mom away so the rest of the pack can attack the two cubs left alone.  The Mama bear, now furious, swings her paws in defense and with some fury pushes her three cubs into the thicket and down into the stream.  The smallest cub is now dripping with blood.  With all the bears in the water…they wait until the wolves no longer pursue them.

The wounds were a lasting reminder of the consequence of not following the instruction of the one responsible for him (his mom, in this case!) Witchcraft is a devastating sin.  One which we saw in our village in the Darien. God states that rebellion is just like the sin of witchcraft! II Sam. 15:23 Disobedience  against our authority will always define the extent of our rebellion.

God places everyone under authority…parents, government, church leaders, employers, etc.  Every human authority is under the authority of God and the Bible. We are either safe under the protection of the one responsible for us or we are in rebellion.  (Ultimately against God)

It’s a choice  we make consistently during a 24-hour period.  If we get out from  under the protective covering of our authority,  we expose ourselves to the realm and power of Satan’s control.  We choose to follow God’s clear instruction or we choose to follow the one who is out to kill, steal and destroy us. Jn. 8:44  Rebellion comes with a consequence…just as the littlest bear did, as he stood in the stream… bleeding!  Decisions…decisions!

 What is your decision?

Who are you following ?

How’s your attitude, your words, your countenance, etc?

We all make choices that affect everyone around us.

Know your authority and listen carefully and quickly obey…

Jackie's Journey "What is Failure?"

My youngest daughter, Kim, always told me growing up that her testimony was not interesting because she was not involved in sin, like testimonies she had heard over the years.  She was born in Panama and her first years were spent in the jungles of the Darien on the Colombian border. She was full of energy, animation and oh so, fun to be around to the extreme.  She definitely kept us entertained and laughing as she marched to her own drummer…and  she was sure she needed no help…”she could do it herself!”  Of course,  that meant her way…her timing…her willfulness…not unlike most of us!

All any of us has to share is our failure and weakness translated into a life message for the benefit of another.  That is my position.  If God can use my weakness to manifest His strength for your benefit, I will praise His name.  Jim Elliot, (husband of Elizabeth Elliot) who was martyred at the hand of the Auca Indians many years ago, once said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”  His spirit of devotedness was shared in his prayer:

”Father, let me be weak that I might lose my clutch on everything temporal.

My life, my reputation, my possessions.  Lord, let me lose the tension of the grasping hand.  Even, Father, would I lose the love of fondling.

How often I have released a grasp only to retain what I prized by ‘harmless’ longing,

the fondling touch.

Rather, open my hand  to receive the nail of Calvary as Christ’s was opened…

that I, releasing all, might be released, unleashed from all that binds me now.

He thought heaven, yea, equality with God,

not a thing to be clutched at.  So let me release my grasp!”

True Christianity is an all-out commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ…an unconditional surrender to His Lordship…He is Boss!  When I was 19 years old and attending the University of Arizona, I had an opportunity to pledge a sorority.  After six months of maintaining above average grades, memorizing huge amounts of information and fulfilling the responsibility of a faithful pledge, etc., I faced the ultimate moment of commitment.

I listened intently as each girl quietly slipped into a private room to pledge her total allegiance to Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.  Racing through my mind was the moment a few months before that I had dedicated my life to God in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ.  When God walked into my life, everything changed for me.  My  total allegiance had already been committed.  I had nothing else to  give.  Allegiance to an organization no longer had any appeal to me.  My purpose in  life had already been defined by my new Lord, Jesus Christ.

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you,

for my power is made perfect in weakness.

Therefore, I will gladly boast all the more gladly

about my weakness,

so that Christ’s power may rest on  me.

That is  why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses,

in insults, in hardships, in persecutions,  in difficulties.

For  when  I am weak, then I am strong”! II Cor. 12: 9-10

Jackie's Journey "Are You Crying Out?"

A CALL TO ALL WOMEN!

If there was ever a time in history

That called for us to fall on our knees…

This is the time!

“Arise and  cry out in the night,  as the  watches of the night begin;

Pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord.

Lift up your hands to Him for the lives of your children.”

Lamentations 2:19

Does your prayer life show the value of those we love and especially, our children?

Years ago, a godly Nebraska friend, Ginny Steele, gave me an alphabet of character qualities with scripture that I could consistently and systematically pray into my two little princesses,  Christina and Kimberly Joy.  It has now been extended as a prayer into the lives of my seven grandchildren.

Jackie's Journey "Silent Promises?"

We live up a narrow gorge that stretches from the valley floor with its ocean and sandy beach to the top of the hill over-looking the harbor.  My desk sits at a window that has a view to an island 26 miles away.  Currently, I am watching the fog blanketing the coastline, bringing a cool breeze into our torched summer afternoon.  Watching the birds ride the currents is a regular distraction and preoccupation.

I  was watching a large hawk sweep down across the pool in the backyard.  As he  ascended high up  into the sky above the valley below, he screeched loudly, over and over.  I observed this magnificent creature ride the current up and down…back and forth.  A  short time later, he swooped down into our yard again…only this time…he was silent

He had a snake dangling from his talons!

“God provides for the cattle and

for the young ravens …when they call out!”

 Psalm 147:9

I paused and realized…  I am that helpless raven that is found “crying out”. Totally dependent on God, placing  my faith continually on His promises and unfailing love!  Whether with no communication with the outside world in the jungles of Panama or here, in the U.S., with way to many ways to communicate.  The most important line of communication to keep open is that with the “King of Kings”!

There are three common characteristics in the lives of our heroes of faith.  The first is their total dependence on God.  The second is they cried out to God first and then obeyed. And lastly, they courageously walked through the door of fear and doubt to experience the joy of genuine faith.

Everything in life is a faith issue.

 “Faith is dead to doubts; dumb to discouragement;

blind to impossibilities”.

We live in a hurricane with endless noise and activity.  Hearing the voice of God speaking to us when we cry out is a cherished and coveted practice, because He whispers in the quietness of our consciousness as His Word is read and His truth dwells richly in us.

Are you listening for His whisper?

Jackie's Journey "The Journey Goes On..."

Today is our Wedding Anniversary!  Marriage has been the proving ground for developing our loyalty to God.  My parents were married 72 years, so 58 years does not seem long. Time does not hold still!  “How completely satisfying to turn from our limitations to a God who has none.  Eternal years lie in His heart.  For Him time does not pass, it remains; and those who are in Christ share with Him all the riches of limitless time and endless years.  God never hurries.  There are no deadlines against which He must work.  Only to know this is to quiet our spirits and relax our nerves.  For those out of Christ, time is a devouring beast!”  A.W.Tozer

“Faithful is He who calls you, who will also do it”.

I Thessalonians 5: 24

How many years have you been married?

I met my Prince at the University and if you were to ask our college friends, they would be astounded that we are celebrating 58 years together. Most did not give us two years!  Ralph and I are polar opposites in almost every way.  However, we had the one element in marriage that will guarantee longevity…we were both individually committed to “burn out” serving God wherever He led us. My husband’s godly zeal and spiritual leadership in our home has been preeminent and a constant for all these years!

I have been blessed with a man who has loved me unconditionally and when he said “for better or worse” he meant it.  We have weathered the storms of life with near death experiences  with long recovery times, more than once, and his loyalty to God and me is notable.  Ralph and I continue to learn and grow together.  Choosing to live in deference has been imperative and key to our taking our two strong wills and finding harmony in God’s will.

Ralph’s name means “bold counselor” and that he is! He is, also, a man of motion and direction.  He was once told he is an” afflicter of the comfortable and a comfort to the afflicted!”  I could write a book with all his wise one-liners, biblical formulas and scriptural definitions.  His capacity to see things in Scripture and interpret them from the inside out to give a total new look to a familiar verse is uncanny!

We were told in our early married life regarding missions that Christian missionaries are people whose passion is to make the Lord Jesus known to the whole world.  They are completely under the command of King Jesus (Ralph often rolls out of bed, stands at attention and salutes heavenward, committing his day!), and they will go anywhere, under any circumstances, for no pay, with poor living conditions and food, even though no one ever notices.  They know their Sovereign God is watching every minute, and that is the only reward and joy they seek…a true missionary is someone who will risk everything for the sake of the lost of this world…this is my husband!

We have a precious heritage that is a loving reminder of our responsibility

into the third and fourth generations.

We are convinced that He takes the weak and confounds the mighty.  We are proof of this truth and His faithfulness…I Corinthians 2:1-2 speaks my heart, like Paul’s, when he says, “…I did not come to you with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.  For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.  I came to you in weakness and fear and with much trembling. My message was not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom but God’s power”.

The chief value of an anniversary is to call us to greater faithfulness in the time that is left.  If we had these 58 years to do over again, we would like to serve more… and better, as we were bought with the price of His blood.  Romans 6: 16-18 says, “We were slaves of sin and now are slaves of righteousness”.   We work daily on being better slaves!

Have you found your marriage to be a proving ground

for your faithfulness to God?

Jackie's Journey "Outlandish Otter Antics!"

Jungle  living was a lot of work.  The daily routine, just to live,  often became humdrum and after removing the clothes from the clothesline for the second or third time because of thundering rain… even dreary!  At times, it was tedious and monotonous.

One day, our partner’s second son, David, came up the bank with a playful river otter in tow.  He had been fishing and this roly-poly little bundle of hyperactivity followed him home! That  delightful creature found joy in life by just being in David’s presence.  He was attention-grabbing and outlandishly  fascinating every waking minute.  He made even his mundane chores a delight.

We watched him conquer the fear of water and take on any difficult activity and turn it into  a lively pursuit.  He entertained us all for hours. His carefree, light-hearted attitude began to speak to my rotten heart!  Joy is not the absence of trouble and inconvenience but the presence of Christ and His fullness.   Joy is the the component that, when added to a trial, provides the strength to endure it.

Had I forgotten that “in His presence is the fullness of joy; and at His right hand there are pleasures for evermore?” Psa. 16; 11  The rewards of joy are physical, psychological and spiritual.  Joy is contagious and I was catching the little otter’s enthusiasm!  Joy is our brightness because “a merry heart makes a cheerful countenance.” Proverbs 15:13  It does good like medicine.” Proverbs 17: 22  Joy is the reward of giving love away.  “The joy of the Lord is our strength!”Neh. 8: 10  Joy is the reward of giving love away!

“Who among us can be counted on for happiness?   It is those who never take  self into consideration.” Amy Carmichael  JOY HAS NO VALUE UNTIL IT IS GIVEN AWAY.  The person who gives joy away becomes richer.  Joy can be expressed in as simple as  a genuine smile from a joyful heart.

Do people see a bright countenance when they look at you?

Are you reflecting  gratefulness with your attitude

toward other’s, your children and family?

If the Word is dwelling richly in you,

and your fellowship with Him is whole-hearted …

your spirit will be joyful.

Jackie's Journey "Fact or Fiction?"

We are confounded with everyone’s opinion.  We cannot escape it!  Everyone has to have a voice. People fight for their opinions.  “Opinions cannot survive if one has no chance to fight for them.” Thomas Mann   Differences of opinion separate families, friends and divide churches.  You can have a low opinion, an informed opinion, a “contrary to popular belief” opinion, a high opinion, a general opinion, an expert opinion, to mention a few.  In truth, there is nothing so short-lived as an opinion without a personal biblical conviction.

The Atheist says “There is no God”

The Agnostic says “There might be a God”

The Humanist says “Let’s remove God”

Pornography says:  “Sex is God”

Greed says “Money is God”

Pride says “Power is God”

Satan says “Be your own God”

“The tongue with its opinions can be a beautiful angel or a hideous demon. It can be honey or vinegar.  The tongue can be pure or vile. The tongue can caress or cut. It can rouse men to act as well as it can subdue their emotions.  A false whisper can infuriate a nation, but the power of eloquence can quell the fury of a multitude.  A word of anger can wound while a word of kindness can heal.  Words of hate can kill and words of love can revive.”

God says: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue”. Proverbs 18: 21

One day opinions will flee and at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue will confess who the REAL, TRUE God is! Romans 14: 11  “The unattended garden will soon be overrun with weeds; the heart that fails to cultivate truth and root out error will shortly be a theological wilderness!” A.W.Tozer

Do you want to put order back in your life and understand our current world events? Whether a mom, college student, young married person, grandma, or whatever your current station in life…we would do well to remember what God says.  It is His opinion only that counts!  “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations ;I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46: 10

Jackie's Journey "Evil's Evolution!"

If I asked you to define the word “EVIL”, what would you say?

Our world, as we know it, is turned upside  down!  The world I grew up in respected God, country and family.  We stood when the American Flag was raised, we started our classes saluting that flag and bowed our heads in prayer before we sat down to study. We respected our elders and stood when they entered the room and offered them our seat.  We were taught to love our siblings, to speak to people so they knew they had value.  We shook stranger’s hands and looked each other in the eye.  We expected truth, not lies.  Integrity was a behavior to be valued.

Right and wrong were easy to discern and making the right choice brought benefit and wrong choices came with instant consequence.  It was easy…the rules to a life of harmony were attainable.  Today, the lines are so blurred, our young people prickle and call it prude!  Having had little experience with living outside unkindness and inconsideration, the entitled young people are bogged down with “gimme mine” instead of “how can we make this work”.  What is wicked, sinful, malicious and immoral are all neglected terms with little or no relevance to life.

It has been coming for a long time and compromise of truth has found its foothold in our worldview.  It used to be we could see it plainly and we just “kept in our lane” and hoped for the best for those around us.  Our hope rested in the final “Word” …what did God think about this?”  The Word decided it…God said it…I believe it…That settles it!” Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will ever read!

I read this this week and it resonated with precise certainty.

First we overlook EVIL;

 then we permit EVIL;

 then we legalize EVIL;

then we promote EVIL;

then we celebrate EVIL!

Our Warning: “Woe to you who call EVIL good and good EVIL”.  Isaiah 5: 30

The sequence of our demise is so obvious.  What part each of us has played with our compromising life styles, remains to be seen, but the end result is undeniable.

The last stage of EVIL is… then we persecute those who still call it EVIL!

“He did EVIL because he did not set his heart on seeking God.”  II Chron. 12: 14

Jackie's Journey "Obstacle or Opportunity?"

We are ending the month of July 2023…half of this year…already GONE!  The world is facing a countdown on a the fast track, with multiple obstacles from which no one is exempt!   On a National, State and Local level we have been,  and  are being forced to face new challenges.  Some tests are big, but none bigger than God’s drive through these encounters to see our lives changed…

As women of faith, we face the ultimate challenge of practicing, sharing, and comforting those around us who are struggling with how to handle it all.  Abraham’s life demonstrated that even the heathen around him recognized the difference between how he lived and those observing him. (Gen. 21:22)  Abimelech spoke to Abraham saying, “God is with you in all you do”!  God told Gideon, “There is a might in you so powerful it can save Israel and that might is MY PRESENCE!”

The Isaiah 43: 1-5 verses confirm that when God’s presence abides on us, we can go through any fire, pass through any waters, through rivers that overflow us (Pucuro, in the Darien jungle!) and know His presence is all we need abiding in us.  We are responsible to choose to “practice His  presence”.  As we do this, God will guide our steps, open doors of ministry, move obstacles, lift cares, remove fears and abide in us!

“Fear not for I am with you” is the promise and comfort

we all need to combat the steady barrage of lies and chaos.

God’s abiding presence brings peace and triumph.  The manifestation of the Spirit-controlled  life…directed and trusting only God…is key to laying hold of the power of God.  It is NOT, God  plus whatever makes me comfortable or is  convenient, BUT only God, plus nothing.

God  attaches a condition to  having His presence in our lives.

Do you know what it is?

We know it is useless to attempt any endeavor apart from  Him… which can only be maintained in our lives, as  we  choose to confess sin and not allow  any unresolved relationship to hinder it!

“God works through holiness,  not a dirty cup!”

Roy Heisson  Calvary Road

When the Israelites were in the wilderness, God manifested His presence to them in a cloud.  This cloud was a pledge.  They never had to figure out their direction or future because their confidence was in that visible cloud of God’s protection.  Today, the cloud of God’s presence hovers over our secret closet of communion with Him through His Word and prayer.

Peace is the prize and it will lead us, empower us, and keep us in God’s rest in every area of our lives, regardless of the confusion and disorder around us. “The continual pursuit of God’s presence will direct us into a revelation of Christ’s glory.  God’s presence will go with us and He will give us rest.” (Exodus 33: 13)

Our guide through this maze is waiting to give us peace and rest…

 Are you ready??
